Lesley Gore interview on Sophisticated Boom Boom 2/19

Hey gang: It was quite strange to watch last night’s Grammys and get my head around the alarmingly long list of artists we lost in 2015. Lesley Gore was one of those artists and today marks the one year anniversary of her passing. This Friday February 19th, I’ll be paying tribute to Lesley on Sophisticated Boom Boom by airing an interview we did in October 2013 as well as journeying through her extensive 60s + 70s pop catalogue. This interview was never intended for broadcast—it was for a writing assignment. But I thought it wouldn’t be right to keep this interview to myself.  I remember having a really hard time personally at the time of the interview, and almost dreading having to sit before a woman I so much loved and admired when really, I just wanted to crawl into a hole. But the interview ended up being a real gift. Lesley, too had been going through a hellish period (her apartment had recently burnt down, she was being sued by her landlord), yet listening to her enthuse about “You Don’t Own Me,” working with Bob Crewe and Ellie Greenwich, women’s rights, the … Read more

SH-BOOM! Friday January 15th!

Happy New Year! It’s been a strange start to 2016—wildly oscillating winter temperatures (yesterday 60 degrees, today 25), forever-flus, and the departure of our truest heroes—Lemmy from Motorhead (he passed on December 28th, but close enough), André Courrèges, and today—so unexpectedly—David Bowie. Sadness is in the air. It feels like we humans could all do with pressing the pause button, or perhaps a month-long hibernation. That said, my intention with this post is to alert you to my upcoming party this Friday January 15th, so please disregard my mournful, sinus-infected words above. Perhaps the actual solution to January’s losses and blues is to gather together in a hot n’ sweaty setting whilst Radley Metzger’s erotic masterpieces transform concrete walls into psycho-sexual eye-candy, go-go girl Anna Copa Cabanna seduces with the swish of her hips, and we—DJs Josh Styles, Todd-O-Phonic-Todd, and me—soundtrack the naughtiness with our most delectable vintage 45s. If it’s anything like last month’s Sh-Boom, I promise that it will be something. Hope to see you there! xo-Sheila Facebook event page:

Moon Boots LA Party

After a blissful week of soaking in hot sulphur springs and digging deep at Esalen in Big Sur, the next chapter of my California adventure takes place in LA, where I’ll be joining forces with Sam Swig ( and Victoria Rawlins (—two of the West Coast’s most exquisite DJs—for MOON BOOTS our Record Store Day afterparty. Really it’s just an excuse to play records with my two vinyl-soulmates. But I extend the party invitation to you all! And hope you’ll join us and dance to our mix of what Victoria so beautifully calls “rare global grooves, cosmic disco dubs, psychedelic soul stompers and exotic bubblegum flavors on sweet sweet vinyl.” MOON BOOTS takes place Saturday April 18th in the basement lounge of Hotel Figueroa at 10pm! See you Saturday my LA friends! xo-Sheila

Sh-Boom with Sampsa Vilhunen!

Sampsa Vilhunen—Sh-Boom’s special guest DJ from Helsinki, Finland has touched down on US soil, and will be joining me at this Friday’s Sh-Boom at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sampsa + his DJ partner Vesa Yli-Pelnonen run a titty-shaking club night in Helsinki called Big Shake, where they spin R&B, doowop, surf, popcorn, mambo, rock n’ roll, Northern Soul + jump blues. They invited me over to DJ Big Shake in June 2011, and I remember thinking at the time that no other DJ gig will ever top this one. And I was right! It’s where I first heard Jo Ann Campbell’s “I Changed My Mind Jack” and so many new + exciting sounds spun by Sampsa + Vesa. The crowd was enormous and ultra-enthusiastic, and the club put my name up in lights! The post-Big Shake crowd spilling onto the streets in the bright 4am sunshine only added to the surreal thrill of it all. This is Sampsa’s first time to the states, so I’m super-psyched that he’ll be joining me at this month’s Sh-Boom! You can find all the event details here: Sampsa + Vesa recently contributed a … Read more

Friends + music lovers! After many months of wishin’ and hopin’ (and thankfully, very little hustling) I’ve been given my very own party at Baby’s All Right, a gorgeous, beautifully lit venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I’ve christened the party, SH-BOOM and the first date is this Friday January 2nd. Joining me behind the booth will be Josh Styles—drummer of Daddy Long Legs, co-founder of NYC’s greatly missed ’60s party, Smashed! Blocked!, husband of English goddess Sophie Thunder, and man of exemplary taste in rock n’ roll, soul + garage. We’ll be spinning in the front room, whilst the Detroit Cobras and Jonathan Toubin entertain in the back. Party starts at 10pm and it’s FREE! You can expect Japanese pop, French Yé-Yé, American R&B, British freakbeat, soul, easy listening, popcorn, soundtracks, doo wop, and mooooooore. Here’s the Facebook event page: I’m so excited…! xo-Sheila

European DJ Vacation

I’m packing my bags for a vinyl-centric work-a-holiday, where I’ll be joining photographer Eilon Paz to host a series of book launch parties for the worldwide release of Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Vinyl Collecting. I’ll be DJing the launch parties in Amsterdam, Paris, and London along with tons of other collectors + DJs featured in the book. It’s been years since I’ve been record shopping in Amsterdam + Paris, so any tips on where to find ’60s 45s are VERY much needed! My liner notes for Nippon Girls Volume II are due next month (with an official release date in September!), so I’ll be spending my days researching ’60s Japanese beat girls in Parisian cafes. Can’t complain! All the events are free + open to the public, so please do come by if you’re in Paris or London or Amsterdam. You’ll find all the details below. I’ll be back with a report from my first stop…. Amsterdam! xo-Sheila Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting was just released in the US as the official 2014 Record Store Day book, and we’re gearing up for its international release on May 20.
