My Wonderful World Of Records

Normally I wouldn’t post an enormous photo of myself here on Cha Cha Charming, but please allow me this one ridiculously exciting exception. This photo was taken by Eilon Paz, who has been trekking around the globe documenting vinyl junkies and their bad habits for his website (and soon-to-be book), Dust & Grooves. He recently came round to my place in Brooklyn, where I played him my top girl-pop picks and attempted to explain my love for Megadeth, Barry Gibb & Barbra Streisand’s Guilty LP, and the Cookies “I Never Dreamed.” He photographed my most prized records (Pinky Chicks, Sue Lynne, Brunetta) and my stash of bizarre ’50s adult-only records that I had completely forgotten I had. I am so very honored to be a part of such a visually-stunning vinyl-appreciation project along with so many record collectors who I know + love. You can read my rants about the collector hierarchy, my missing Gillian Hills EP, the 45 versus the LP, and feminism here: xo-Sheila

Ponderosa Stomp!

This time tomorrow I’ll be on a plane headed for New Orleans, host of Ponderosa Stomp!, a music festival dedicated to the unsung heroes of rock n’ roll, soul, swamp pop, and garage rock. I shall be planting myself at the front of the stage on the Friday evening, where Maxine Brown, Baby Washington, and Chris Clark will be representing the ladies of soul (I am especially excited for Chris Clark, who I’ve never seen live). Then on the Sunday evening I’ll be joining a gang of fellow record collectors + DJs for a post-Ponderosa Stomp DJ gig. The lovely Cassandra Lee (DJ Bossy Boots) has offered to split her set with me as long as I play Jean & the Statesides “Putty in Your Hands” and Jan Panter ” Scratch My Back.” Deal!  Here are the deets….. Cruel Summer

This has been one grueling summer. I remember a similar summer when I was 22, having been struck by a series of panic attacks that forced me to call “time out” on my life, and go on a treacherous journey inwards. I dug into ghastly places, pulled out unsavory memories and met my most frightening fears. I’ve always been plagued by an inability to ignore my gut and plow ahead. When my subconscious calls, it will do everything in its power to paralyze me physically so that I have no choice but to listen. I listened when I was 22, trudged through the shit, and ushered in the autumn panic-attack free and a whole lot happier. The lesson learned was that no matter how much I wanted to look away, the only solution was to welcome in the very unwelcome fears, insecurities, and uncertainties, feel the pain, and dig deep to uncover the source. I’ve been trying very hard to remember that brutal process and its rather awesome outcome, but I’m currently in the “feel the pain” stage, and so it’s hard to envision a happy ending. I’ve also been … Read more
