I’ve made numerous attempts to write this entry, wanting to address the many tragedies we’ve been witnessing over the past few weeks. But everywhere I turn there is outrage, fury, blaming, shaming, and endless opinions on how we can fix the world. History shows us that change is incredibly slow, that the pendulum swings between tolerance and open societies to intolerance and closed societies, that the ugliest traits of humankind are as much a part of us as our most wonderful traits. But there is always light and beauty and wonder and kindness, even in the darkest of days. This concept is so beautifully illustrated in Viktor Frankl’s book “Man’s Search For Meaning,” where he writes about his ability to find joy and love in the bleakest of circumstances—as an inmate at the Auschwitz concentration camp.
“Then I grasped the meaning of the greatest secret that human poetry and human thought and belief have to impart: The salvation of man is through love and in love.”
I hope that in these dark times we can each find the light and love and make them bigger.
WFMU’s SOPHISTICATED BOOM BOOM
Sophisticated Boom Boom fled to the sea for the past couple of weeks, but will return to the WFMU airwaves this Friday from 3pm – 6pm EST. I’ve got an unexpected beauty as my Single of the Week tomorrow. It’s the most gentle and elegant of pop songs, written by a father to his newborn daughter. I can’t wait for you to hear it. If you missed any of the last couple episodes, you can catch up here:
Deep Sea Diver (June 24, 2016 / Single of the Week: Wanderlea: “Prova De Fogo” 1967)
Orangutang Boomerang With Guest DJ Sam Swig (June 17, 2016 / Single of the Week: Jacqueline Taieb “7 Heures Du Matin” 1967)
NAUGHTY STEWARDESSES MIX FOR JONNY TRUNK
Library music king Jonny Trunk invited me to make a film-centric mix for his radio program, THE OST SHOW on Resonance FM in London. You’ll hear lotsa Hollywood gals (a very moody one by Tippi Hedren), Italian girl-pop from the film “I Knew Her Well,” spy spoofs, Japanese bossa nova + freakbeat, and a beach strip tease from Mamie Van Doren. You can listen to it via the widget below:
EUROPEAN DJ TOUR
I will be embarking on my first DJ tour ever this August and playing nine dates in London, Paris, Helsinki, Budva (Montenegro), and Copenhagen. The thought of skipping around Europe (or perhaps skipping is the wrong word given that I’ll have about two hundred 45s with me) DJing, meeting new and old friends, and digging for records is verrrrrrrrrrry exciting! Here are the details:
Every 3rd Friday of the month, I host a sexy 60s rock n’ roll party called SH-BOOM at Our Wicked Lady in Brooklyn, which features 60s erotic cult-film projections, New York’s premier go-go-girl, Anna Copa Cabanna, and local and international DJs spinning all-vinyl sets of French Yé-Yé, girl groups, garage, British freakbeat, Northern Soul, soundtracks, R&B, and Japanese fuzz-pop.
The next SH-BOOM is tomorrow, Friday July 15th from 10pm – 4am, and Norton Records’ Reyes Rodriguez will be sharing the decks with me. Here’s the Facebook invite. Weather permitting, we’ll be hosting SH-BOOM up on the roof + under the stars!
DJ gigs coming up…..
