Veronica Lake 06.17.07
I just returned from a weekend trip up North, as part of our nationwide search for girl singers. I've always thought the tone-deaf mutants who gave horrendous performances on American Idol/Pop Idol/X-Factor did so intentionally, so as to get on TV, but my experience proves they are for real, and they truly believe they can sing. Or, in many cases, their over-ambitious parents--who are so eager to turn their children into stars--convince them that they can sing. Tragic. Let's just say I've mastered the art of keeping a straight face during the most hilarious of moments. Of the hundreds of girls we've seen over the past few weeks, only five were truly mindblowing. One girl had the face of Belinda Carlisle Go-Gos era, and a voice 100 x more powerful. We heard tons of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, the Pussycat Dolls (yuck!), Pink....but most popular audition song of all--Eva Cassidy's "Over the Rainbow." No comment. Journeys to and fro were spent watching The Avengers and Veronica Lake flicks--my latest adoration. I thought I'd start a lil' movie club, and watch the filmography of actresses whose name I know, but whose work I'm mostly unfamiliar with. Veronica Lake was first on my list. Her silky peek-a-boo is irresistible, as is her naughty voice. I'd recommend Sullivan's Travels and I Married A Witch. Other than that, e-mails about Amy Winehouse flooded my inbox when she first released her second album, but I've only finally seen the light. It's the best album I've heard all year. But you all already know that. Sheila Posted by Sheila at 04:12 PM |
