Ebony + Ivory

02.21.06

The sex addicts next door have been replaced by American Idol-izing couch potatoes, who occasionally take a break from TV to blast Madonna’s ABBA cover—with extra bass. I miss my old neighbors. We had a silent deal. They could have sex at full volume and I could do the same with my music. Perfect harmony.

Soo...... here’s the weekly recap. Le One Night Stand after-party for Saint Etienne was a proper blast. So Joe’s Pub wasn’t quite built for dancing, but get a drink or five down the throats of Monday night party people and they’re quite happy to jump on stage and get all loosy goosy (as Mike would say). Audrey aka Melody Nelson nearly caused my death by playing “Voyage Voyage” while I was caught between two boys on the couch with no way out. My only exit was jumping onto and off of a very shaky glass table. Not smart. Merlin snapped away at our dancing girls, namely go-go Valentine Anna Copacabanna, who looked stunning in red. Check out the Last Night’s Party photos here. Bob spun as adoring fans watched and waited for autographs, Layla, dressed ‘60s China doll style, kept things French and garage, while Audrey and I switched between ’68 and ’86. Played Annie’s “Heartbeat” with a purpose, and the Pet Shop Boys got a few Brits onstage raving about their love for the group. I loved them too, boys. But what went wrong?

Jump to Saturday night @ Subway Soul where I joined Nancy and Phast Phreddie for their 10-year anniversary pre-party. I’ve already warned Nancy that I won’t be able to stop gushing about her beautiful life. I just thought I should write this in my diary—incase God is reading—because really, having a smart n’sassy 17-year-old daughter named Syd (decked out in Mary Quant and dancing and singing to rare soul records), a partner with a MEGA record collection and the best soul nite in NYC, AND just being an all-round amazing and enthusiastic woman—I’d say that just about sounds perfect. And check out the anniversary cake in the photo! Nancy’s name on one 45, Phreddie’s name on the other. I’ve already got tears in my eyes. So so beautiful.

My monogamous devotion to the Bee Gees has meant fewer diary entries for former lover, Lou Christie, but the feelings came rushing back after Lou’s heart-melting performance at the Brooklyn Performing Arts Center last night. Layla and I, and 200 senior citizens watched and cheered the falsetto dynamo as he wailed his way through “The Gypsy Cried,” “I’m Gonna Make You Mine,” a cover of “Never My Love” and finally, “Lightning Strikes.” In a glittering turquoise top (just barely obscuring his big belly!) and black flare slacks, Lou looked fabulously Las Vegas. And he gently demanded that he be treated as such—running to each side of the stage to take a bow in hopes of receiving a roaring round of applause. Old ladies were bopping in their seats, and after every song the crowd responded with a standing ovation. Layla and I rushed the stage during the last song, hoping to shake his grand hand (we did! we did!).

We had traveled nearly 20 subway stops to see Lou, and there was no way in hell I was leaving without meeting the man himself. I was expecting quite a bit of work and negotiation ahead, but when we politely asked if we could go backstage to take a picture with Lou, the stage guy was like, “Sure, go right ahead.” That was easy!

So Layla and I waited at the bottom of the stairs, and when he came down, we’re like, “Lou, can we please take a picture with you, cos we think you’re the greatest.” He smiled, looked back at us, and said, “Say it again!” And in unison, Layla and I screamed, “Lou, you’re the greatest!” Like totally smitten teenyboppers. And one of the backup singers (in the greatest New Yawk accent) added, “Look Lou, they’re young and pretty too.” To which he responded, “Yeah, maybe there’s hope for me after all.” It was brief, funny, and awesome. And here’s the backstage photo. So happy! Off Layla and I went into the Brooklyn snowstorm, totally giddy and starstruck.

Man, we had a party!

Yes indeed. Reaction!, the NYC '60s weekender went above and beyond. Vinyl junkies, mods, DJs, and swingin' sixties gals flooded NYC from all over the country to join in on the debauchery. The grand finale at the Delancey last night was possibly one of the most the most glorious celebrations of '60s soul ever. As Lady Dawn (in diamonds and a beehive) from the Subway Soul club said, "I've been to '60s weekenders all over the word, but I've never experienced anything like this." Hats off to the Mighty Hannibal, who despite being blind, gave a spine-tingling performance that sent shivers through the entire crowd. It was electric. So sexual. The girls were pulling their hair, screaming, swinging their hips. Amylu, Dawn, and I met eyes mid-set, shaking our heads in disbelief. And the Dansettes—Jaime, Jennie, Leah—first with their own performance, and then as the Mighty Hannibal's backup singers, oozed style, sass, and a level of soul sophistication that blew my mind. I've always been a bit apprehensive about retro acts, but last night's performance extinguished all doubt. They were brilliant.

Sheila's favorite Reaction! DJ: Tony The Tyger
So he didn't spin any girl-pop, but whatever he was playing had the entire Beauty Bar stomping their feet.

Got to DJ three sets over the weekend. The Ladies Only DJ showcase slash boozefest slash record fair started at 2 pm. By 3;30 I was $200 poorer, after finding an original copy of Etta James' "Seven Day Fool." I told Michael Robinson that I only had the reissue. "Oh well then you don't have the record," he responded. Ouch! And Evie Sands' "I Can't Let Go," which I had also been on the hunt for. Met Billy + Miriam from Norton Records, the shocking pink DJ Gemini who specializes in ska and rocksteady, and Ty Jesso who sold me a couple of great girlie goodies. Played Yvonne Carroll's "Mister Loveman" out for the first time. It went down well with a Negro Modello. As did many of the Japanese beat girls.

Now for the visuals.......
