Too Much

06.27.05

swedeny.jpg

Feist charmed a Saturday night Bowery Ballroom crowd with a voice miles clearer and stronger than on record, and some pretty hysterical in-between-songs banter. Who knew the girl doubled as a comedian? All the tracks sounded great except for the acoustic version of her Bee Gees cover "Inside And Out." Dance songs should never be stripped of the dance.
I'm surviving on two hours sleep. I don't usually stay out until 6 am on Sunday nights, but Kalle was in town and I never pass up a night with Swedes, especially ones that have gold teeth like Belle De Jour hottie Pierre Clementi. After their gig at The Knitting Factory, we all headed to Spring street club Sway, which was JAMMED beyond belief at 3:30 in the friggin' morning! Who in their right mind is out at that hour on a Sunday night- drinking and dancing like it's New Year's Eve?
Tonight I must rest because Annie's Djing/ performing at Hiro tomorrow night and doors don't open until 11. A week of international pop and no sleep.
The Le One Night Stand party gang is hooking up a bash for Bastille Day (Thursday July 14th) so I'll post the flyer as soon as it's ready. And to celebrate the French national holiday, I'll be playing a full set of Japanese pop- from then and now. And Mylene Farmer's "Sans Contrefacon" of course.

Oh yes, perhaps you noticed the new splash opening page for Brit Girls CD It's So Fine? Just a little bit of shameless self-promotion for my liner notes. If you live in England you have no excuse not to buy it. Yankees head to Amazon.

Gosh, I have the sarcasm turned up high tonite- must be from too much of too much.

shoot.jpg

My mornings are always yogurt + darjeeling tea, BBC news, e-mails to friends, and Pumpkin flicking CDs off my desk. This morning was a fabulous break from the norm. I got to hang out at the studio of fashion designer Gemma Kahng for a photo shoot for the upcoming issue of Permission magazine. I'm usually the one arranging the shoots, so it was nice to be on the receiving end for a change- dressing up in Gemma's angelic couture and posing on the rooftop above downtown Manhattan. Thankfully the photographer, Markus Hirnigel, went for my 45 rpm prop idea, which relates more to the article than pretty dresses. Gemma played me some heartbreaking Korean music from the late '60s- a singer named Lee Mi Ja who she likened to the "Barbara Streisand of Korea." Fortunately I didn't hear the connection. I flipped through Gemma's press book in her studio and found photos of Madonna, Sharon Stone, and Ivana Trump all sporting her gear. Gemma said that in the early '90s she was all about bold power suits (hence Ivana Trump as a loyal client), but now the bohemian atmosphere of downtown NY is inspiring a more girly and relaxed line. The stuff I got to wear was gorgeous.

I just found out I get to interview one of the main inspirations behind "Cha Cha Charming." Oh. My. God. OK, I need to find a way to get rid of this crazy energy. I can barely sit still.

More later.

Thriller

06.19.05

No worries folks- Mary's fine (it's Pumpkin who looks troubled). And she gave me full permission to use this photo on my diary. This can happen after consuming Japanese shochuu, which we drank in copious amounts at Williamsburg Japanese bar, Bozu. I was praying that Bozu would have my favorite drink Tantakatan (shiso-infused shochuu), so when I asked the waitress if she had any, she ran over to her manager who then ran over to me, saying "HOW DO YOU KNOW TANTAKATAN?!!" So I explained I was just in Tokyo, and he said that there is not one bar in the USA that carries Tantakatan, but a friend from Tokyo had just been visiting NY and brought him a bottle. He's like, "I only live nine blocks away so I'd be more than happy to go get it for you." Really sweet offer, but I wasn't about to let this guy share his precious bottle with me. But I had no choice. He runs out of the restaurant and comes back ten minutes later, bottle in hand and pours a glass for me and Mary. What a man!

Two of my friends from Tokyo are coming on Wednesday- with Tantakatan!

Coolfer listed the Amazon.com sales rank of Michael Jackson's Thriller For Monday June 13th (pre-verdict), Tuesday June 14th morning (day of the verdict), and Tuesday June 14th evening (post-verdict). Check out the results-

Monday June 13th (pre-verdict): #8, 436
Tuesday June 14th morning (day of the verdict): #2, 922
Tuesday June 14th evening (post-verdict): #358

"Yay! Michael Jackson doesn't feel up small children- now we can enjoy Thriller again!"

I thought net users belonged to the more educated sector of society. But choosing Thriller over BAD......

Crazy week of deadlines, work, interviews (possibly with Feist on Sunday- my fingers crossed!), and photo shoots ahead, but all I wanna do is drink and dance.

so far so fine

06.16.05

I started my new job this week as BUST magazine's marketing + PR gal. So far so fine! Also, Amylu invited me to join her, Audrey, and Andy Shaw as one of the hosts of Le One Night Stand, which we hope to turn into a regular international pop party. Le One Night Stand is the main feature on Last Night's Party.com. Check out last week's photos.

Last night Amylu and I danced til 3 am @ Melody Nelson's fab party Atomique. She is the queen DJ.

OK- change of subject. FED EX just banged on my door with a LONG-AWAITED, HIGHLY ANTICIPATED delivery from the U.K- my first liner notes for CD compilation- It's So Fine- Pye Girls Are Go! featuring 50 tracks from sixties British girlies!!!!!! This calls for extra exclamation points and champagne (well, maybe 11 am is a bit early to start boozing). But I'm feeling euphoric!! Since I first started collecting girl pop (London circa 1995) I relied heavily on liner notes to lead the way. My three fave Brit boys- Mick Patrick, Malcolm Baumgart, Bob Stanley- were compiling and annotating girl pop comps Here Come The Girls and Dream Babes, and I would just gush over the knowledge and the love and the writing that went into these compilations, never even imagining that one day I'd get to do it too (aww... I'm getting all sentimental). It's So Fine hits streets on June 27th, so more details then. For now, I'm just gonna quietly revel in this happiness because the boy + cat that share my living space are starting to get annoyed by my excessive giddiness.

Right- tomorrow night @ the Knitting Factory Xavier and I will be Djing from 10:30 pm. Here's the info:

Euro-visions party
Friday June 17th
10:30 pm
Knitting Factory, NYC

Flyer + details here.

And a treat- the photo erotica I promised you by Japanese genius Yoshihiro Tatsuki. So hot.....

Also, for you all in the U.K. Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley is hosting a film festival at London's Barbican theatre featuring rare pop documentaries from the '60s to the '90s. Girl group fans won't wanna miss the premiere of the Dolly Mixture doc., one of four films showing at the Punk and DIY Revolution night on Tuesday June 21st. Former metal diehards like me should head to the Barbican next week for the Teenage And Pre-teen Age Aspirations night, featuring a film about a 15-year-old metalhead and his band Manslorter (sic). So sad I can't be there. Click on the links below for more details.

Last night's Le One Night Stand was brilliant! At one point when I was Djing, I noticed all these guys just staring in my direction. I'm all happy thinking I've seduced a crowd of boys with my sexy French pop, but no.... right above me two go-go girls were strutting their stuff in cute French berets and stripy short shorts , and for the rest of the night I was being bombarded with requests to introduce the dancers to my friends. Check out more Le One Night Stand pics at Last Nights Party.

DJ gigs

chicago.jpg

Just returned from a short trip to Chicago where I did some translating work for my friend Chocolat. She's in the studio with producer John Mcintire (Sea & Cake, Tortoise) mixing her new album (which sounds breezy and beautiful by the way). While John and Chocolat's husband Akito were fine-tuning bass sounds, Chocolat and I were relaxing in the den watching DVD shorts by French animator/ director Michel Ocelot. What simple yet touching storytelling. He must be added to my list of obsessions. I returned the favor by introducing Chocolat to Phil Spector's latest hairstyle, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

This Thursday June 9th, Amylu and Andy Shaw are throwing their second French Pop party Le One Night Stand where I'll be Djing along with Melody Nelson, Josh Styles & Peppermint Twist, and Xavier from Euro-visions. I'm on first (frees me from the responsibility of having to play only dance music) so get there @ 10 pm for free vampire vodka and summery '60s pop. Also, there will be free giveaways from Feist, Nouvelle Vague, and Telepopmusik. And also free issues of BUST magazine.
