Amazon Women

05.31.05

noraneko.jpg

Top ten lists are always fun, so I thought I'd rank some of my current favorites.

Sheila's Random Top Ten

1. Amazon Women On The Moon (1987)

This film has been slammed as "wholly unfunny" but I wholly disagree. It's a series of ludicrous skits featuring '80s champions Arsenio Hall, Steve Guttenberg (someone please locate this genius and give him the retrospective he deserves!), Rosanna Arquette, Kelly Preston. My fave scene: charity infomercial with Don "No Soul" Simmons and B.B. King to help blacks born without soul.

2. Sylvie Vartan "Est-ce Que Tu Le Sais?" (1962)

I've had some pretty harsh words for Sylvie Vartan's poor handling of American pop and R&B, but after watching Sylvie twist to this ubiquitous Ray Charles cover on her first Scopitone (the sixties equivalent of a music video) I grew to love this track.

3. 野良猫ロック:セックスハンター (1970) (Stray Cat Rock Sex Hunter)

Japan's sexy good witch, Mieko Kaji (pictured) was a major influence on Tarantino and KILL BILL. Sex Hunter, the third in a series of five Stray Cat Rock films, casts Mieko Kaji as the leader of a vicious yet kind-hearted girl gang caught in a battle between the "pure" Japanese and the half-breeds. Real half-breed girl group Golden Half make a live appearance.

4. Kishin Shinoyama: NUDE (1970)

There are blonde girls baking in the desert, Japanese cuties posing on Tokyo rooftops, and an Afro girl running in the mountains. Possibly the most gorgeous photo-erotica I've ever come across. I promise to post some shots soon.

5. UNCUT magazine

America will never do music magazines like the British. We just ain't got the historical perspective nor the guts to dismiss what's bad (although the excess of four stars in UNCUT tells me the British are going a bit soft as well). Try to overlook the incessant gushing about Bob Dylan and the Band, because there's some really great writing in here.

6. Stevie Nicks

Maybe it was the drapes of flowing black lace or her bearded band-mates (too much facial hair reminds me of the '70s- one era I have yet to appreciate) that turned me off Stevie Nicks, but all of a sudden I feel the need to know more about this woman. Any Stevie experts 'round here who can suggest where to start? E-mail me- editor@chachacharming.com

7. Corinne Charby: Pile Ou Face (1987) + Boule De Flipper (1986)

'80s French idol pop- all synthesized all ultra-melodic. Thanks to Nassim and Antoine for the introduction.

8. School Of Rock (2003)

Jack Black's facial expressions make me smile from start to finish (well except during Sarah Silverman's parts cause somebody forgot to tell her that not all comedians can act).

9. Lionel Richie: Running With The Night (1983)

With the Toto boys on guitar, Richard Marx on background vocals, and '80s cheeseball Lionel Richie, it could've all gone so horribly wrong (like "All Night Long" and "Dancing On The Ceiling"), but Brill Building couple Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann rarely wrote a bad song.

10. http://thesuperficial.com/

The anonymous way to indulge in celebrity voyeurism.

I'm off to Chicago on Thursday for work, so I'll check in from there.

Worry About The Wind

05.19.05

hal.jpg

Home sweet home after six weeks in Asia. I'll never take a direct Hong Kong- New York flight again. I can tolerate the 13 hours it takes to get to Tokyo, but 16 hours is excruciating. By the last two hours I was making up games to play with myself- one of which I called "Listen Without Prejudice" featuring UNCUT magazine's companion CD.
Since I am totally guilty of harshly judging bands before even giving them a proper listen, I decided to listen to the full compilation without peeking at the tracklist. My little game didn't turn out to be too much fun, as most of the bands were predictably crap, but I did discover one gem- HAL "Worry About the Wind," which I played over and over until the plane touched ground. I'm a little hesitant to recommend them, as all my friends have given me that "why the hell do you like this?" look after hearing the track. But I think it's absolutely fantastic. The melodies evoke all sorts of emotions in me- at which point I'm ready to call them the best group I've heard all year. If the Beach Boys, late '60s harmony groups, sunshine pop is your thing, search out HAL here.

As I try desperately to recover from this jetlag, I've been working on new articles for the site, which should be up sometime in early June. Also my new partner in NY partying Amylu is throwing her next LE ONE NIGHT STAND at Bar Eleven on Thursday June 9th where I'll be Djing along with Melody Nelson and Josh Styles/ Peppermint Twist. The flyer will be posted to the Events section this weekend.

Yummy Yummy

hong-kong_1.jpg

My first lunch in Hong Kong consisted of baby pigeon, chicken's feet, and other dim sum delights. Tomorrow my lovely and wonderful tour guide Katherine promised to take me for turtle jelly, a Chinese delicacy that's supposed to be quite healthy.

I actually didn't think I'd make it to Hong Kong. The kind folks at Japan Airlines took one look at my luggage and said I'd have to pay $500 in excess weight fees. That's pretty much the equivalent of a round-trip ticket to Japan. But after crying my eyes out and making a fuss for 30 minutes, they gave in and let me go free of charge. Thank god.

Hong Kong is stunning- hundreds of brightly lit skyscrapers surrounded by water and tiny mountainous islands. Parts of the city remind me of Tokyo, NYC, and even Vancouver, but it's got its own vibe, smells, and..... the largest number of Filipino and Indonesian domestic workers I've ever seen in my life. We drove by a park in downtown Hong Kong today that was PACKED with these domestic workers- it was quite a sight. I've been told that one month's salary in Hong Kong is equal to one year's salary in their native countries. These women are so careful with their money, saving every penny for their families in the Philippines, so instead of shopping or going to cafes during their breaks and days off, they hang out in the parks. That way they don't spend a dime.
