Legend vs. Legend

My eight-month internship at Warner Music Japan paid off in free gigs, free CDs, new friendships, and a fabulous electronic darts board (complete with my own pink & purple darts). And now- five months after leaving Japan, my WMJ mates commissioned my coordination and translation services (a.k.a. help) for a one-day job in NYC with an artist named Toby Lightman. She's a petite, blonde Jersey girl with a voracious soul voice- not my style of music, but she's for real.

Two Japanese sisters' won Tokyo FM's Trip to New York with Toby Lightman contest, and WMJ's Horiuchi-san and Terashita-san accompanied the girls on their trip. We met Toby on her tour bus where we did a few interviews and recorded tons of "Hi! My name is Toby Lightman and you're listening to...." for Japanese radio. Once of the interviews was entirely based on Christmas- what was the best xmas present you've ever received? What do you usually eat on Christmas?, etc. Turns out Toby Lightman doesn't celebrate Xmas, so I hope my last minute switch to a Hanukkah theme won't confuse the disc jockey.

After the excited sisters got their photos and autographs and watched the gig at the Canal Room (nice new venue, expensive beer), we went to dinner down the road in Tribeca. Horiuchi-san, who is in charge of Brian Wilson at WMJ, told us about a funny encounter between Brian and the Eagles' Don Henley at a recent Smile performance. After the gig, Don Henley approached Brian Wilson with a couple Beach Boys records for Brian to sign. Brian took the records and began writing "Thanks for the great---" and then he paused, crossed out "great" with two black lines, and continued writing. "Thanks for the great good music." Ha! Nice way to put a fellow legend in his place.

A new playlist is on the way, and new articles are in the works. Yesterday I signed the lease for a new apartment in Brooklyn. Yup, I'm abandoning Manhattan for the cheaper and quieter pastures of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
